American billionaire Shahid Khan withdrew his offer to buy Wembley Stadium from the egame Football Association on this day in 2018 egame

In a statement, FA chief executive Martin Glenn said: “Shahid Khan has informed us today that he will be withdrawing his offer to buy the stadium – and we fully respect his decision egame
“At a recent meeting with Mr Khan he expressed to us that, without stronger support from within the game, his offer is being seen as more divisive than it was anticipated to be and has decided to withdraw his proposal egame
”The proposed deal had the support of the FA’s senior leadership, including Glenn himself, and was also backed by the government but there were significant doubts elsewhere, most notably at the grassroots level itself egame
Khan’s intention was to eventually use Wembley as a home for his relocated Jaguars but was also willing to agree on several highly restrictive conditions on how he would run the national stadium, one of them being to keep the venue for all of English egame football’s biggest games egame
However, wider concerns about whether the FA was selling the family silver too cheaply, its ability to spend the money wisely and Khan’s long-term plans for the stadium all led to the downfall of the sale egame
In a statement, Khan, 68, said: “I’ve been clear publicly as well as in my correspondence with the FA Council that it would require a proper partnership, with the full and enthusiastic commitment of all involved, to maximise the benefits to the FA and game of egame football egame
“At this moment, following last week’s FA Council hearing, it appears there is no definitive mandate to sell Wembley and my current proposal, subsequently, would earn the backing of only a slim majority of the FA Council, well short of the conclusive margin that the FA chairman has required egame
“The intent of my efforts was, and is, to do right by everyone in a manner that strengthens the English game and brings people together, not divide them egame
“Unfortunately, given where we are today, I’ve concluded that the outcome of a vote next week would be far from sufficient in expressing the broad support favoured by the FA chairman to sell Wembley Stadium egame
“I am respectfully withdrawing my offer to purchase Wembley Stadium egame

The Premier League will make around 270 matches available for live broadcast in the next domestic television cycle, in what is set to be egame football’s most lucrative rights sale in history egame
The current cycle includes 200 matches across seven packages, but the league is looking to offer more games across just five packages in its next sale egame
The Premier League is also breaking from tradition by looking to secure a four-year deal from 2025-26 and 2028-29, instead of the usual three-year deal egame
The league’s Invitation To Tender (ITT) on Wednesday evening confirmed the 3pm Saturday afternoon blackout will stay in place, but that every 2pm Sunday kick-off, including those displaced because of clubs being involved in European competition, will now be televised egame
Five midweek rounds will be available in the package instead of the current four (including the egame Boxing Day round), while the Saturday 12 egame
30pm and 5 egame
30pm and the Sunday 2pm and 4 egame
30pm stay in place, along with the 8pm Monday or Friday slot egame
The ITT states that a minimum two broadcasters will be able to hold the live rights egame
This will be the first time the Premier League has been through a tender process for its rights since 2016 egame
That is because the current deal, which runs to the 2024-25 season, was a roll-over of the previous one after the Government granted an exclusion order amid the Covid-19 pandemic egame
Sky is the current owner of four packages (128 matches per season), TNT two packages (52 matches) and Amazon one (20 matches) egame
The reduction in the number of packages is sure to make competition fierce, with streaming platform DAZN understood to be one of the parties interested in entering the market egame
The tender process will be overseen by an independent monitoring trustee egame
