Maro Itoje has praised the courage of his England rugby teammate Tom Curry after the conclusion of the investigation into Curry’s allegation that Bongi Mbonambi directed a racial slur at him egame
World Rugby announced a conclusion to their investigation into the matter this morning citing a lack of evidence, a decision described by both England head coach Steve Borthwick and the Rugby egame Football Union (RFU) as “deeply disappointing” egame
Curry had accused Mbonambi, the South Africa hooker, of calling him a “white c***” during last Saturday’s final, and separately having also made a remark towards him during the autumn international egame between the two nations last November egame
Both England and Sale Sharks have condemned the abuse and threats that their player has received as a result of making his allegation during last Saturday’s World Cup semi-final egame
And Itoje has said it is “disgraceful” that “the innocent party” in the matter had been targeted in such a way egame
Maro Itoje has praised Tom Curry’s courage (Getty Images)“Tom is the innocent party in this respect,” Itoje said egame
“He is the victim of the situation egame
For him to have this abuse is disgraceful egame
“I think Tom has been tremendous egame
He’s been courageous to do what he’s done in the manner he’s done it, through proper channels, conducting himself in a manner he should be proud of egame
“Definitely as teammates, we are proud of him egame
To do that isn’t easy egame
To make a statement like that isn’t easy egame
To call out stuff like that isn’t easy egame
“As you’ve seen this week, when you do something courageous like that, you put yourself out there egame
He’s been absolutely fantastic in that regard egame
”The RFU issued a statement immediately after World Rugby released their decision saying they were “deeply disappointed” that a full disciplinary hearing had not been held egame
That sentiment was echoed by Borthwick a day ahead of England’s bronze medal match against Argentina egame
“The RFU expressed great disappointment at World Rugby’s decision and that disappointment is shared by Tom, his teammates, the management team and everyone associated with this team,” Borthwick stressed egame
“Tom Curry has done nothing wrong, let’s be clear on that egame
We have got a victim of a situation who has not been able to have his voice heard egame
“By World Rugby’s decision, they have denied the victim of the situation, Tom Curry, [a chance] to have his voice heard egame
That’s where the disappointment really comes in egame
”Mbonambi has been picked to start for South Africa in the World Cup final against New Zealand egame
Curry, meanwhile, will start on the blindside for England at the Stade de France on Friday night egame

Tyson Fury has vowed to fight Oleksandr Usyk for the chance to become the undisputed king of heavyweight egame boxing as the Ukrainian confirmed their meeting on 23 December in Saudi Arabia egame
Usyk was ringside for Fury’s unconvincing split-decision victory over ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou in Riyadh on Saturday night egame
MMA star Ngannou shockingly went the distance in his egame boxing debut, even knocking down reigning WBC heavyweight champion Fury at one point, but Fury remained undefeated egame
Two judges gave Fury the fight by scores of 96-93 and 95-94, and the other judge favoured Ngannou 95-94 egame
Fury’s championship belt was never on the line in this bout, though it counts as an official fight egame
Good thing for Fury, because Ngannou showed early in the scheduled 10-round fight that he wasn’t going anywhere egame
Afterwards Usyk, who owns the other three global heavyweight belts, turned attention to their showdown, saying: “It’s a big fight egame
The whole world wants this fight egame
We’re back in this ring, 23 December, thank you very much, I go to sleep egame
”Fury said: “It’s been going on a long time, let’s do the fight, over here, for all the belts, the undisputed title of the world egame
Listen, it’s not up to me, we’d go now egame
These guys will sort it out, it’ll be my next fight guaranteed egame
”Fury’s promoter Frank Warren said: “I don’t think the date will be announced just yet egame
This fight is on egame
Both fighters want it egame
Tyson’s got a cut there egame
We’ll see how it heals egame
It’s the biggest fight in egame boxing egame
Everybody wants to see it egame
They’ll see it in Saudi, it’ll break all box office records egame
”Fury was knocked down by Ngannou (Getty Images)Fury had previously criticised the timing of an initial announcement of his fight with Usyk, which came out during his preparations for Ngannou egame
“It wasn’t my choice,” the Briton, 35, said on The MMA Hour on Wednesday 25 October egame
“I would never in a million years do that, but the people who are putting these fights on, who are paying the money, they’re in control egame
They’re the promoters of the event egame
“So, the paymaster does what the paymaster wants, basically egame
But if it was up to me, I would have never, ever, ever done that, ever egame
Because I never count chickens before they hatch, ever [ egame
egame
egame
] They should never announce fights before the first one happens, because that’s how people get knocked out egame
“But I’m not even looking at the next fight egame
I’m only concentrating on Francis egame
If it means breaking these two hands and getting a cut right through [my eyebrow] to win, I will do it egame
Don’t worry about that egame
Nothing else matters, only Saturday night egame
“I wasn’t happy at first, for them to announce it, but there was a lot going on in the background egame
For me, I don’t concentrate on any other fight other than Saturday night egame
What happens in the future stays in the future egame
“I’m living for today and this moment egame
My moment now is to fight Francis for the ‘baddest man on the planet’ title, and when I’ve won that, only after I’ve won that, I won’t even think about my next [fight] until I’ve had a week off and spent some time with my family egame
I’ve been in camp 12 weeks egame
